we use a continuous scale on our paper forms which allows for the interviewed participants to point to a place on the scale which then gets converted to a number between -100 and 100. I was wondering if we could modify the forms we got from KoboFormDesigner by writing some xml code by hand, but I am guessing that unless javarosa supports that particular xforms schema, it won’t work. Has anyone tried this?
KoBoCollect does not currently support a slider such as you have described.
Generally, for this purpose we use a Likert scale, a range of options to collect respondent’s values or feelings about some subject.
A preference slider would have to generate a value, a number that is recorded into the database. You could imagine a slider that generates a value from -100 to +100, but small gradations wouldn’t really matter.
Instead, we usually give the respondent options like:
Very Unsatisfied | Unsatisfied | Neutral | Satisfied | Very Satisfied
and assign those options values of 1-5. It’s useful and easy to analyze. In KoBoForm, you create a single select question, and create 5 options. You don’t have to use 5, you could use any number. Label the options accordingly. KoBoForm will auto-number them.
Development for a wide range slider, such as you have described is possible, and we have considered it, though it has not been a high priority and we are not sure when you are likely to see it in KoBoCollect.

In this regard, you probably should check out for ODK Survey 2 (Warning: it’s still in Alpha). It’s a major revision, and now supports this feature.
