Database error and error 401 at data entry

Our project has been active more than a year and has more than 6000 entries. Data is entered by multiple persons and there is no login. A new user created over 100 reports yesterday and they all got queued up instead of being submitted. When looking at the queue there is an error message:

This user got a database error occasionally at data entry (“Failed to execute ‘transaction’ on ‘IDBDatabase’: The database connection is closing“).

The problem is not occuring for other users and again, there is no login protection. How do we resolve this? The form can be found at Enketo Express for KoboToolbox

Hi @tore2e, welcome back to the forum. This issue can sometimes be caused by unstable internet connectivity or a browser‑related problem. It’s worth checking whether your situation matches the one described here:

If that doesn’t solve it, please try the following steps to recover your unsent data:

  1. Open the Web Form queue
In your webform, click the tab on the left to open the Queue, then export unsaved forms.

  2. Log in to your KoboToolbox account.

  3. Upload the exported ZIP file manually
In your browser, go to: https://kc.kobotoolbox.org/your_username/bulk-submission-form Replace your_username with your actual KoboToolbox username.

  4. Submit the ZIP file Click Choose file, select the ZIP you exported in step 1, and hit Send.

Our form does not require a login:

This renders the provided download URL not appluicable for us. We tried the user name of the account that owns the form but that didn’t work, probably since the user wasn’t logged in when the reports were submitted. Is there a download URL for users that are not logged in?

Best regards
Tore

Hi @tore2e,
To download the data using the process described above, you do not need to be logged in. The only requirement is that the browser remains open with the unsaved forms.

Best,

The download URL includes a user name. Which user name do I use when not logged in?

Tore

I see we’re dealing with two separate issues here:

  1. The authentication error (401).
This error indicates that you don’t have the required credentials to submit data. In many cases, this happens because the form does not allow submissions from users who are not logged in.
To fix this (you have already done), you need to allow submissions without authentication. You can do this by enabling the option shown in the image below:

  2. Uploading data to the project.
To upload data, you must use a valid user account. This means you need to be the project owner, or the project owner must perform the procedure described above Steps 3 to 4 . To be able to download data you dont need to be logged in just carry the procedure shown in step 1 here:
