[KoBo Users] Can't save form file

Hi Dana,
I'm sending this with a different subject as it's not related to Kumar's
original question. Stephen is right - you can always save a file with this
slight detour by copy-pasting its XML code into a text editor and saving it
as .xml.

Did you try if you have this issue when saving the file from Chrome?

The likely reason why you can't save your file directly from KoBoForm right
now is that you need Java installed, and if you have Java installed, it's
possible that it's the version of Java that's causing the issue. That's a
known problem caused by newer browser versions. We are fixing this issue
with the new release of KoBoForm, but you can still use the functionality
by installing an older version of Java
here<Java Archive Downloads - Java SE 6.
If your MacBook is 64 bit (here is how to
check<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696>\),
you need to download both the x64 and x86 versions.

Let me know if that fixes your issues.

Hi Dana
There is a second alternative. You can easily slelect see form text on the
menu of the kobo form and then copy the text and paste on a new document
opened using notepad +++. Remember to ensure you set the language of the
document to xml and then save as to your appropiate location.

However I believe Tino will sort you with the error.

Hi Tino,

I'm testing KOBO for the first time and have developed a short
questionnaire that I'd like to download onto a smartphone. However I'm not
able to "save to file" which I believe is needed to be able to download the
questionnaire onto the phones. When I try to save to file I get the error
message. It just won't save on the HD. I'm using a Macbook Pro, FYI. Not
sure whether that matters.

Sorry if this isn't the same thing, Kumar Ji.

Java seems to be working now and I'm trying to save to file but it
won't save. Please see error message attached.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi Guys,

having a hard time getting the form saved! Apart from that amazing tool! THanks for all the hard work your putting into this!

I followed all the steps advised:

 1. Using Firefox
 2. Added the website address to Java, so that the error messages disappears while trying to download the file and the download box opens correctly.
 3. Still not working… Then I copied and past the file doc in C+++ however, won’t allow me to open the file from the programm… The programme freezes…

Can somebody pls. help asap!

Thanks a lot guys!

Still not having any luck though have been working on a colleague’s computer which is Windows based. His computer also won’t save the questionnaire to file. It’s pretty frustrating.

I went to the Java site but didn’t see a reference for OSX, the options are Linux, Solaris and Windows.

Hi Dana,
We added a page to help with this issue:
http://www.kobotoolbox.org/support/userguide/koboform/opening-saving-forms\.

In particular, you have two options: Install the latest version of Java and
enable kobotoolbox.org in the security settings, or copy-paste your code
into a text editor. The above link will help you with both. The copy-paste
option is a workaround, but it definitely works, so long as you have a text
editor installed (for Mac OS, Fraise is a good option; another one
would be Komodo
Edit <Komodo IDE By ActiveState - One IDE for All Your Languages). I recommend fixing the Java
issue on your computer using the instructions on the above link so that
saving and opening to and from files works as well, which is of course
slightly faster than the copy-pasting solution. The page includes links on
how to download and configure Java on your computer, including for Mac OS.

If you have any problems with the instructions on the above link, please
let me know!

Still not having any luck though have been working on a colleague's
computer which is Windows based. His computer also won't save the
questionnaire to file. It's pretty frustrating.

I went to the Java site but didn't see a reference for OSX, the options
are Linux, Solaris and Windows.

We don't have Notepad ++ but will try to download that too.

Hi Dana,
I'm sending this with a different subject as it's not related to Kumar's
original question. Stephen is right - you can always save a file with this
slight detour by copy-pasting its XML code into a text editor and saving it
as .xml.

Did you try if you have this issue when saving the file from Chrome?

The likely reason why you can't save your file directly from KoBoForm
right now is that you need Java installed, and if you have Java installed,
it's possible that it's the version of Java that's causing the issue.
That's a known problem caused by newer browser versions. We are fixing this
issue with the new release of KoBoForm, but you can still use the
functionality by installing an older version of Java here<Java Archive Downloads - Java SE 6.
If your MacBook is 64 bit (here is how to check<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696>\),
you need to download both the x64 and x86 versions.

Let me know if that fixes your issues.

Hi Dana
There is a second alternative. You can easily slelect see form text on
the menu of the kobo form and then copy the text and paste on a new
document opened using notepad +++. Remember to ensure you set the language
of the document to xml and then save as to your appropiate location.

Thanks
Dana

Hi Dana,
When do you see this error? What is leading up to this, i.e. what are
you trying to achieve when this happens?

Thanks,
Tino

I think I maybe having the same issue so maybe I can jump in also.
Sorry if this isn't the same thing, Kumar Ji.

Java seems to be working now and I'm trying to save to file but it
won't save. Please see error message attached.

Any advice would be most welcome.
