Load from file in KoBo Form Builder

Hi all,

I’m having trouble loading files in KoBo Form Builder. I am assuming it has something to do with Java…

I can still select an .xml file in the Open from file dialog, but then when I hit select, the window shrinks and the form does not load.

The opening of the dialog and selecting the file triggers in the Java Console:

Couldn’t get a handle on the javascript object
Couldn’t get a handle on the javascript object

Also, these are the Java settings (from top of Java console):

Java Plug-in 10.17.2.02
Using JRE version 1.7.0_17-b02 Java HotSpot™ Client VM

The screen shot of the non-cooperative dialog box is attached. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I tried googling the error from the console, but couldn’t find anything helpful.

Thank you,

j

Koen,

Just to eliminate simple sources of error, you should also make sure that you are logged in (upper right corner). While the login is only local, it is required in order to save a form.

These sound like issues with the Java plug-in.

When your Java plug-in is wonky, it gives you issues interacting with the local file system, so save file and open file dialogs can produce an error, or just show you a blank dialog.

Can you send a screenshot of your error?

Does it just not do anything when you clicks “Open From File…”

Please make sure you’ve cleared the cache and try again.

If none of that works. Go to the Java Control Panel, in the Window’s Control Panel, then go to the Advanced Tab and enable the Java Console, so we can see what the problem is.

Hi,

I am trying out KoboToolbox for field use, however Koboform seems not to work for me. Well, designing the form seems to go okay, but saving to file doesn’t work:

I am presented with an empty dialog (Firefox) or an error that Java is not found (Safari). (I tried Opera, IE, or Chrome, but the site did not work in those).

When I try to set the library location in firefox, I can browse to a location with no problem, but afterwards am presented with an error telling me Java cannot close the dialog.

Are these known issues, and if so are there any sollutions/workarounds?

Thanks,

Any chance you are seeing an icon in the address bar that shows when your plug-in has been disabled?

This sometimes happens when you upgrade the browser or java (or something, not sure what triggers it).

If so, enable it.

If not, this is still an issue with Java plug-in, which controls local access to the file system. There are a lot of safety measures around this for obvious reasons.

One way around this is to use KoBoForm’s “Load from Text” function.

You can use this to paste all the XML into KoBoForm and open it that way.

No, I was seeing that earlier (I couldn’t even open the select file dialog before OR save to file) - but I updated the plug in and that issue went away.

The paste from text option works beautifully though! I totally overlooked that option. Thanks Neil!!
