Mismatch between data labels in form, and KOBOTables and XLS download

Hello! I’ll keep the issue brief. It seems that the responses for one question are appearing under the purview of the next question, and the responses section of the first question appears blank (when I view responses in Kobo tables and also when I download the data as XLS file).

What’s happening instead?

Please pay attention to the mismatch in options under the respective questions 1 & 2, in the actual form and in the data table. Responses for question 1 is appearing under question 2 in the table. The table is left blank, in the space where the responses for question 1 should actually have appeared. The questions are in the Malayalam language.

Hi @navaneethakrishnan, welcome to the forum

Could you please share the complete project name and, if possible, the XLSForm you’re using?

Welcome @navaneethakrishnan

Did you change the form durlng data collection?

There might also be a problem with your naming of some options, see screenshot from Formbuilder.

The project name is “Post-Relocation Socio-Economic Impact Assessment Survey”. I used the Kobo Formbuilder to build from scratch.

Yes, I did change my form during data collection. Does that mean such discrepancies cannot be corrected now?

If there are issues in naming of options would’nt I have been unable to save the form after edits? Thanks for your response, what sort of issues should I look out for in the naming of options?

If you change the names, this will create a new field in your dataset. This is different from changing only the labels, which does not alter the stored values.

The same applies to choices: modifying the name generates a new stored value, while modifying the label only changes what users see.

To understand exactly what has been stored “under the hood,” you can always check the XML values in your data table.

This looks like a problem with the question names or column mapping in the XLSForm rather than the Malayalam labels themselves. Check the name values for questions 1 and 2 and make sure there are no duplicate or changed names, then redeploy the form and test with a new submission.
