How could I make a multiple-choice grid in the Kobotoolbox form to collect attendance?

Welcome to the community! You could do the same in KoBoToolbox as outlined int he image below:

In the survey tab of your xlsform:

In the choices tab of your xlsform:

In the settings tab of your xlsform:

Please note: This should work smoothly with web form (Enketo) and may not work as expected with KoBoCollect android app.

Thank you for your answer. I have couple of questions regarding this.

  1. Can it be made directly by kobotoolbox without doing the XLS form?
  2. How could I add pre-selected answers in this form. Let’s say Present is the default option how could I make that pre-selected?

Regarding your concerns:

You could also try this out with matrix question type in the KoBoToolbox User Interface as outlined in the support article here or check out for the discussion that has happened on matrix question in the community forum here.

Could you slightly elaborate your concern on the pre-selected answers with an example so that we could respond to you with the answer that you wish.
