Offline KoBo Form Designer Issues

Hi all,

My project team has been testing KoBo Form Designer. The (Repeat)
question type and reordering (Group) questions by drag/drop can cause
unexpected failure. Are there any workarounds?

Thanks
-EM

Hi Em,

thanks for the testing feedback.

Can you give me a better idea of the error that you are getting when the failure shows up? There is usually a details button that can give us some more indicative info.

EM,

ok, let's try the drag & drop first.
One, you are dragging and dropping, not cut & pasting, right?

Some background: The drag and drop functionality is part of the
com.extjs.gxt.ui.client.dnd.TreePanelDropTarget, which is from the
same third party UI framework.

As a work around, try to drag the top item to the 2nd from bottom
spot, and then drag the bottom item above the first item. Now the
first time is the last item.

How does that work for you?

Em,

can you tell me how you are using the Group/Repeat function?

(I mean, what are you trying to ask that can’t be done without repeating?)

Neil,

We are planning to ask students to enter basic information (name,
location, group, etc.) once. The students will be asked repeatedly to
take multiple pictures and capture sound at the same spot. We don't
want them to enter the same basic info again.

I didn't use drag/drop or cut/copy/paste. I got error messages after I
added questions with "groups" and repeats". Let me know if there are
workarounds.

Thanks

Eric,

our support for repeating groups is limited. this is something that’s on the roadmap for further development, and I can tell you that the reason we haven’t really put that much support behind it is simply that we don’t use repeating groups in our own research. I know other groups have need for this, so I am hoping we can put some effort into repeating sections in the near future.

In the meantime, let me offer you a couple of workarounds.

First, if the enumerators are going to collect a fixed number of photos and sound bits on the survey, you could just create that number of media questions. If you don’t know how many photos they will take, you could create a few more than you think you need, make sure they are set to be not required, then your enumerators could take the photos they need and skip the remaining media questions. It’s kind of a kludge, but it’s easy and quick.

Second, you could just create your survey in KoBoForm, then save your form to your desktop, then edit the XML by hand later. It’s pretty simple to edit in your groups.

Here is an example form:

http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/source/browse/Household+Survey.xml?repo=forms

Here is background about how it works:
