I’m trying to figure out how to confirm that respondents to a survey are real, not bots/algorithms. Is there a function for inserting a captcha, like the google reCAPTCHA or some other system, into a kobotoolbox survey?

Welcome to the community! Kindly please be informed that unfortunately KoBoToolbox at the moment does not support captcha feature. Would you mind making a new feature request here explaining in detail.

I would like to reiterate the point by @Kal_Lam
In addition, you could also create your own question that confirms user is human which will take advantage of the validation logics e.g. use a summation question that can only take a particular answer to allow someone to proceed.
