Over the past couple of years, while designing and deploying numerous KoboToolbox questionnaires for research, monitoring & evaluation, and field data collection, I noticed a recurring challenge.
Although XLSForms are incredibly powerful, designing large questionnaires directly in Excel can quickly become difficult to manage. As questionnaires grow, maintaining consistency, organizing skip logic, managing repeat groups, validating syntax, and collaborating with non-technical team members becomes increasingly challenging.
Most questionnaires also begin life as Microsoft Word documents before someone manually translates them into XLSForm.
This inspired me to develop the Enubiaka Questionnaire Design Standard (EQDS).
EQDS is a structured methodology for designing questionnaires before they are converted into XLSForms. Rather than beginning with spreadsheet syntax, researchers focus on the questionnaire itself—its structure, logic, flow, and quality. The technical conversion comes afterwards.
Why EQDS?
The goal was never to replace XLSForms or KoboToolbox.
The goal is to make designing professional KoboToolbox questionnaires simpler, more consistent, and significantly less error-prone.
EQDS provides a standardized way of organizing:

Response options
Sections and groups
Skip logic
Repeats
Validation rules
Metadata
Survey structure
Because every questionnaire follows the same design standard, converting it into an XLSForm becomes predictable and largely automated.
The EQDS Ecosystem
To support this workflow, I have been developing an ecosystem around the standard.
EQDS Builder
The Builder provides a structured environment for creating questionnaires using the EQDS methodology. Instead of worrying about spreadsheet syntax, users concentrate on producing a well-designed questionnaire.
EQDS Converter
Once an EQDS questionnaire is complete, the Converter transforms it into a valid XLSForm suitable for KoboToolbox, ODK, and other XLSForm-compatible platforms.
Instead of manually building complex Excel sheets, the conversion process handles much of the technical work automatically.
Professional Enough for Organizations…
Large organizations often require questionnaires to follow strict internal standards.
EQDS introduces consistency across projects by encouraging standardized naming conventions, questionnaire organization, routing logic, and documentation. This makes questionnaires easier to review, maintain, audit, and reuse across teams.
…Simple Enough for Students
One of the design goals was accessibility.
Students, NGOs, independent researchers, and first-time Kobo users should not have to become XLSForm experts before creating high-quality questionnaires.
EQDS separates questionnaire design from spreadsheet implementation, making the learning curve much gentler while still producing professional outputs.
