Line breaks are not processed questions in Enketo

It looks like line breaks are working right in notes, but now in the question text. Is there a work around?

Hi Adam,

That’s correct. For performance reasons, this (and text formatting) is only supported in notes. I’m in discussions with a sponsor to get funding to implement this across all questions. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Martijn

I am having trouble with line breaks, even in notes.

For example, in the attached file, line breaks (in both notes and questions) are preserved when I preview the form, but as soon as I deploy it, they disappear.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

If you import your XLS Form with linebreaks and deploy it right away they will be preserved. If you edit the form in the formbuilder they will be stripped. We’re working on preserving them in a way that allows adding linebreaks in the formbuilder directly (e.g. with a special character).

Hi Martijn and Tino,

Thank you both for your support and apologies for taking a while to get back to you.

Martijn, your deployment looks correct. But as you can see, on mine, I lose the line breaks! It doesn’t have anything to do with the “::” vs. “##” appended on the url, does it?

Tino, I haven’t been using the form builder at all, so I don’t think that is the issue. I tried again with a fresh form (rather than redeploying form the xls) and got the result linked to above.

Thanks again for your help on this and the other issues I have posted on behalf of my team. We are really happy with the software!

Best,

Jonathan

Hi Jos,

I can confirm that line breaks are being stripped right now when you upload your XLS Form. We’ll look into and fix this shortly. In the meantime there’s a legacy way to upload your form that will not remove the line break: Go to https://kc.kobotoolbox.org (or https://kc.humanitarianresponse.info) and use the link at the bottom of the page to upload your form. This will also create a project in your regular overview after a few minutes as the two lists are kept in sync, but here the issue doesn’t exist.

Best,

Tino

Hi Jonathan,

Glad it worked for you. Note that the two URLs refer to different servers - so it’s expected that it would only for you on the server that you had created the account on. The HumanitarianResponse.info server is hosted by UN OCHA, while the other one is hosted by us at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

Hi Tino,

Thanks for the reply. I have accounts with both servers, so I tried uploading the form on both (with my separate credentials). Not sure why I got the 500 error on the humanitarianresponse.info server, but it works great on the Harvard one.

Hi,

Was there a fix implemented for this? My line breaks are still getting stripped from Notes fields when using XLSForms.

(I will open a new thread for this if that’s more appropriate.)

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Tino,

Thanks for the reply. I have accounts with both servers, so I tried uploading the form on both (with my separate credentials). Not sure why I got the 500 error on the humanitarianresponse.info server, but it works great on the Harvard one.

Best,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Glad it worked for you. Note that the two URLs refer to different servers - so it’s expected that it would only for you on the server that you had created the account on. The HumanitarianResponse.info server is hosted by UN OCHA, while the other one is hosted by us at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

Best regards,

Tino

Thank you! That definitely works.

Just a note: I wasn’t able to upload via the https://kc.humanitarianresponse.info/ site (I get a 500 Error) but uploading the same form at https://kc.kobotoolbox.org/ worked like a charm.

Best,

Jonathan

Best,

Tino

Sorry, just realized that the url got broken when it was embedded in the hyperlink. My deployment is here:

Hi Martijn and Tino,

Thank you both for your support and apologies for taking a while to get back to you.

**Martijn, **your deployment looks correct.

Best,

Is the issue with KoBoCollect? A deployed form on Enketo seems to work as expected: https://ee.kobotoolbox.org/::YoCU

I am having trouble with line breaks, even in notes.

For example, in the attached file, line breaks (in both notes and questions) are preserved when I preview the form, but as soon as I deploy it, they disappear.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi Adam,

That’s correct. For performance reasons, this (and text formatting) is only supported in notes. I’m in discussions with a sponsor to get funding to implement this across all questions. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,
Martijn

Hi Matt,

At least for me, no. It still works fine on the legacy uploader, but looks like that may be disappearing soon. I really hope that they are going to fix this with the update to kf!
