If you put \ before any of the special characters it will prevent their styling effect.
For example, see the first “emphasize” (screenshot 1) is in italic because there are * (asterisks) at the beginning and the end of the word “emphasize” in the label of the question. But if I want to use the * (asterisk) character itself without any styling, I can just add \ at the beginning of that word. (See screenshot 2)
