Problem with Pasting Options from Excel into Kobo Toolbox Form

Dear colleagues, I need your help with an issue I’m encountering. I copied several answers or options from an Excel sheet and pasted them into the ‘Import Cascading Select Questions’ box in KoboToolbox. However, when I attempted to paste this text into the related questions in Kobo form, the options\answers did not appear. Could you please assist me in resolving this? Thank you.

@aminabualsoud, are you using the cascading select template from our support article Adding Cascading Select Questions?

@Kal_Lam: Yes, I have just started using the cascading select template from the support article, but I’m still struggling to get it working correctly. Even though I’ve created the Excel file, copied and pasted the data, and linked the questions, the display isn’t working as expected. I find myself having to repeat the process multiple times.

@Janna Rous: access to the file has now been granted for anyone who is willing to assist in resolving the issue and helping to create the cascading questions. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @aminabualsoud ,

I assume you are looking for choice filter. From the csv file that you had shared,

I had made the excel file for you reference attached down below, where District is filter from the Region,

If West bank is selected, option Bethlehem will shown in District and based on district selected, the option of locality is shown.

Hope this works out for you.

Thank you very much for the modified Excel file. As I am new to Kobo Toolbox, please excuse me if I ask some basic questions. My plan is to open the Excel file, then copy and paste the information along with the table titles section by section. After that, I will make the necessary adjustments within the question boxes, such as using formulas like region-filter=$(region), etc. I will leave the information in the first worksheet unchanged and won’t copy and paste it. Is that correct?

Sorry @aminabualsoud,

I didn’t quite got your question about it ?

I followed the necessary steps as outlined. Please check the video linked below to see the output after inputting the data. However, I encountered an issue with saving the project—I received a message indicating that the project could not be saved. The internet connection at my office is working well, so I’m unsure what might be causing the problem. Could you please advise on how to resolve this? Thank you.

I assume its is issue of internet. Sometime it happened on my end as well.

Other wise than that, I didn’t see any issue on it.

For Cascading selection question, its better to make in excel and upload later in the interface as you had done.

@Dnes: thank you for your valuable feedback. Interestingly, when I delete these newly added questions and save the project, it works fine, which suggests the issue might be related to the newly entered questions. I’ll keep experimenting to identify the root cause. Any additional insights you might have would be appreciated as I continue troubleshooting.

Thank you for your support.

Hi @aminabualsoud,
When you’re making your formulas in the Choice Filter, make sure you’re using curly brackets instead of normal brackets, for example: region-filter=${region}.

Also, as in @Dnes 's example XLSForm, it looked like the thing you were missing from the cascade select table that you initially shared was a column titled ‘name’. Check that out in the support article that @Kal_Lam shared, it seems you don’t have that column in your Google sheet.

What you could do is also attach your XLSForm of your questionnaire, if you still can’t get it to work, and we can help you modify it directly so you can see.

Hope these tips are also helpful!

Dear Ms. Janna,

Thank you so much for the helpful tips! I have attached ([file-1+ file-2) two files for your review and assistance. The second file includes both Arabic and English, and I would be grateful if you could ensure that both languages are functioning correctly for the cascading question.

Your support is much appreciated!

Dear Ms. Janna,

Thank you so much for your helpful tips! I posted two Excel sheets for your kind review and support. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look and assist me with modifying them as needed. I am wondering if I can also insert a column for Arabic language? Looking forward to your feedback.

Best kind regards,

Amin,
