when w10 is used so that there are only 10 cells in a row, the grid ends up having 11 cells in the first row.

Likewise, when w9 is used so that there are only 9 cells in a row, the grid ends up having 10 cells in the first row.

hi @Kal_Lam
actually we are not using kobo toolbox. we are using odk aggregate and enketo express. as the base is xlsforms i thought i could get answers here. i tried uploading the form you suggested on this portal https://getodk.org/xlsform/ but it gives an error while parsing

In this case, try designing your matrix question in a form builder and export the xlsform. You should then be able to use the same with https://getodk.org/xlsform/
