While submiting: Error: Generic Exception: No peer certificate

I am trying to submit some forms collected with kobocollect (v 1.4.3) in a android device.

Since two weeks ago, I have been receiving the following error:

Error: Generic Exception: No peer certificate

and also:

Error: Generic Exception: Connection manager has been shut down

I searched on some forums and I tried the following steps to understand it:

  • Check if connection is ok - I opened a browser and it is opening Google website with no problems

  • remove https from url server and replace it with http: started to get the error: Internal server error: (500) at http://kshumanitarianreponse.info/ibpf/submission?deviceID=mei

  • Check if the phone date is correct - it is correct

In another phone, in the wifi and 3g, I got other errors, but also related to Peer Certificate or Internal server error (attached in the question)

Can anybody help me?

Are you able to visit https://kc.humanitarianresponse.info/ibpf/formList on your device?

You seem to have set a password for your account, so if you’re unable to upload submissions so please verify you’ve entered the correct username or password.

I tried the configurations with the login and password, but it didn’t work. I also accessed the formList from the browser and I was able to see the xml.

Images are attached.

I am concerned, since I have over 100 finished forms in another cellphone with stopped connecting with the server after a while. Is there any way for me to back up the forms and send it in another way?

Which Android device(s) are you seeing this error on, and which version of Android do they run? Some Android devices and versions in the past had issues like this, but I haven’t heard of such an issue for a long time. My guess is that it’s a network issue on your end or else an issue with your device.

Please confirm the following:

  • Could you confirm if this issue is related to one, several, or all of your devices?
  • If you have other Android devices please try submitting data.
  • If you can use a different wireless network, please try that as well.

Finally, you can always submit the data via your computer if for whatever reason your device is not able to connect properly. To do this follow these steps.

Hi, Tino. I found out that this is happening with all the devices. But I tested in three different networks and got the same error. I am using Sony Xperia and Alcatel one touch.

Fortunately, I was able to do the bulk submit vie computer. Thank you very much. For a few of the devices data, I got a time out error (a lot of forms to submit). You could make it a asynchronous routine in the server to prevent it.

As we discovered yesterday this is likely related to the language set on the handset. We’re working on resolving this issue, which only appeared a few days ago. Which language were your devices set to? Please try setting them to English and then submitting data with them in Collect to check if this also resolves your issue.

Hey, Tino. I tried changing the phone language to english and still did not work.
Unfortunately the problem is still happening with the mobile phones and now it got worst. We formatted them and now, when we try to open the app it crashes right after the opening. Do you know when the new version will come to the play store?

Hi Bruno,

The error related to non-English Android was resolved a week ago, so in any case this is no longer an issue for anyone.

For the original error of not being able to submit: Please try to connecting using a different WiFi/Internet connection. It’s possible that you are seeing this issue because of a very restrictive firewall setting. Also please specify which devices and Android version you’re using exactly. Also please confirm if this issue is taking place on all your devices or only some, and if yes, what the respective devices are.

For the problem of Collect crashing when you open the app after formatting the device: Please connect the device to your computer by USB and then remove the entire ‘odk’ folder (if you haven’t already submitted the instances on that device, save the ‘instances’ folder and upload them to the server as you did earlier through bulk submission).

Some Android devices and versions in the past had issues like this, but I haven’t heard of such an issue for a long time. My guess is that it’s a network issue on your end or else an issue with your device.

Please confirm the following:

  • Could you confirm if this issue is related to one, several, or all of your devices?
  • If you have other Android devices please try submitting data.
  • If you can use a different wireless network, please try that as well.

Finally, you can always submit the data via your computer if for whatever reason your device is not able to connect properly. To do this follow these steps.

Deleting the odk folder solved the problem! Thank you for the guidance!

If the kobo app could identify corrupted files or folders this would be awesome. If I can help testing the app in any way that coul help you identify the problems let me know.

Hi Bruno,

The error related to non-English Android was resolved a week ago, so in any case this is no longer an issue for anyone.

For the original error of not being able to submit: Please try to connecting using a different WiFi/Internet connection. It’s possible that you are seeing this issue because of a very restrictive firewall setting. Also please specify which devices and Android version you’re using exactly. Also please confirm if this issue is taking place on all your devices or only some, and if yes, what the respective devices are.

For the problem of Collect crashing when you open the app after formatting the device: Please connect the device to your computer by USB and then remove the entire ‘odk’ folder (if you haven’t already submitted the instances on that device, save the ‘instances’ folder and upload them to the server as you did earlier through bulk submission).
