BioMetric Data and KoBo

Hello,

I am developing an app with KoBo for vaccine tracking. We would like to be able to use a fingerprint scanner or any other biometric data to save with each entry created in our app.

Is it possible to input data into Kobo Toolbox from a fingerprint scanner, or any other biometric device?

And if so, How can a form be created for such input?

Hello Veronica
To be able to integrate this you may have to have an app that identifies the finger print and generates a related code that can be used to feedback into KOBO Collect. This is an adaptation that will have to take a variant of the normal adaptation of ODK, and (KOBO Collect team may correct) I don’t think KOBO Collect may be able to assure and guarantee the performance of the additional adaptation. We have had such similar adaptations in Kenya with independent support.

Hi Veronica,

What you’re asking has been brought up by the community before, but I’m not aware of a ready-to-go solution. If one exists, I know many other people would love to know about it.

Theoretically it is definitely possible as the form can take any binary data as input. For example, when you take a photo with the image question type (or video, or recording) on an Android device, these questions ‘call’ other apps who then handle the data input outside of Collect. These media files are then saved in the /sdcard/odk/forms/… directory, with a file reference saved in the actual form data. Such an external app could handle scanning the fingerprints in a variety of ways through an external fingerprint (or iris, etc) scanner, communicating with the phone or tablet via BlueTooth or other means.

Here’s the latest discussion on this issue from the ODK mailing list that might help as well.

Best,

Tino
