I am running into an issue regarding geotagging images from Kobo Collect. In my tests, this is what I found:
- I have a ‘photo’ question type in my form
- Collecting data via Kobo Collect
- The donor requires for photos collected via Kobo that they are geotagged. We’ve got location settings turned on in the devices AND we take geopoints, just to make sure we’re collecting geo data.
- When I take a new photo directly within Kobo Collect, with location settings turned on in the camera app, the geotagging info is correctly embedded and uploaded with the picture. When I download that image from the Kobo Toolbox server, I can see the gps data in the photo properties.
- However, if I first take a geotagged photo with my camera (not from within the Kobo Collect app) and then ‘attach’ a photo from my phone gallery in the Kobo Collect app form (i.e., I’m not taking a ‘new’ photo from inside Kobo Collect, I’m attaching an existing image), the image’s geotagging/location info appears to be stripped by Kobo or is not uploaded. So when I download that photo from the Kobo Toolbox server, there is no GPS info in the properties (even though the GPS info is there in the photo on my phone).
- It seems the workflow (e.g., attaching existing photos from the camera gallery versus taking them new in the Collect app) affects whether geotagging location data is included with the photo submission.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to get Kobo Collect to keep the geotagging data when attaching existing images from a device camera gallery?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
