Help! 'Survey Publishing failed: Undefined'

Hi all,

Quick question.

I’m running a large-scale survey in South Sudan, and have put our questionnaire into KoboForm (love the new look btw).

Only problem occurs when I go to ‘Deploy as new project’. Nothing happens at first, but then after about 45 seconds I get this message: ‘Survey Publishing failed: Undefined.’

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Appreciate any help you can provide as we’re looking to launch our pre-test first thing next week.

Thanks very much,

Matt

Hi Matt,
The problem you’re describing is a bug we discovered just this week and we’re very close to fixing it. The issue only happens with large forms. Luckily there is a workaround: 1) Download your form as XLS to your computer, 2) Go to http://kc.kobotoolbox.org and click on “Upload your XLS form here directly”.

Best,

Tino

Thanks very much Tino.

I really appreciate the prompt reply.

Unfortunately I’m having another fairly serious issue. I can open and work on our survey, but as soon as I go to save it I get the following Error Message: ‘a server error occured: Bad Request’.

Any idea how to fix this? Everything has been working very smoothly until this came up. Unfortunately I lost a fair amount of work, but now I can’t seem to save anything.

Your help and patience is greatly appreciated.

Hi Matthew

I was able to upload your form, edit it (added a few questions) and save it. I was also able to export that and import it at kc.kobotoolbox.org

I don’t have access to the application log and we are working to improve error messages. But in the meantime, could you try to import the xls file as a new form and see if the error is repeated? Can you also be specific as to what type of changes causes the error and what system you use (I am on a pc, using firefox as browser). I hope Tino will be able to provide more assistance shortly.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks very much for following up.

I’m glad to hear that it is saving and uploading on your end… Gives me some hope that we’ll be able to sort out the issue on my end.

Following your advice, I re-uploaded the XLS file as a new form, opened the form, added a question at the beginning of the survey and tried to save it. Unfortunately the same error message popped up (please see attached for a screen shot).

My system is a MacBook Pro running OS 10.10 (Yosemite).

Up until today I have been working in Google Chrome. When the issue arose I also tried to save the file in Firefox, but without any luck.

Very grateful for the help and support as we roll out our pre-test in 48 hours.

best,

matt

Hi Matt,

The issue you’re experiencing is a recently identified bug that is to do with a very small number of restrictive local public wireless networks, which set a strange limitation on content headers when saving a form back to the server. We are working on a fix and will have it done ASAP this week. So it has nothing to do with your browser or operating system or computer you’re using.

The workaround is to use a different wireless network from the one you’re currently using.

Sorry for the trouble but at least you’ll be able to save the form this way. Collecting data is not affected by this bug and can be done on any network.

All the best,

Tino

Matt
