Image URLs Missing in Power BI Power Query – Only File Names Displayed

Hi KoBo Community,

I’m importing submission data from KoBoToolbox into Power BI using the Json API, and I’ve encountered an issue with image fields. Specifically:

  • The image file names from questions like Photo_001 and Photo_002 are showing up in Power Query as plain text file names (e.g., IMG_5893-13_25_59.jpeg)
  • However, the image URLs (i.e., links to the actual media files stored on KoBo’s servers) are not appearing.

Here’s a screenshot from Power Query showing the issue:

I have validated that I can see the images in KoBo manually via submission review.
Couldn’t attach more than 1 image here but can share that screenshot if needed.

Any guidance on solving this issue would be appreciated. Thanks.
Best,
Ashis.

Welcome to the community, @Apal! Was it functioning differently before? Or, is it the first time you are trying to link your project images to Power BI?

Pinging @ambassadors for your support here (who have wide knowledge of Power BI).

Thanks. Not the first time, I’m doing it for couple of months now. It’s just, I had to change the data importing way. Since Kobo had a row cap of 30000 rows per request, I had to switch to JSON Api to import the data inside power query.

Hi @Apal,

Maybe this topic will help you: View images in Power BI
