I am trying to import data that has already been collected into Kobo so that I can view it on a map. Is there an excel format for this?
Hi Alexis,
Can you clarify exactly what you’re trying to do? Did you already submit the data from your mobile device(s) to the server (kc.kobotoolbox.org or kc.humanitarianresponse.info)? Once the data has been received by the server, and assuming your form included a GPS question, you can visualize the points in a map or by downloading the KML file that can then be imported into Google Earth or other software.

Hi Tino,
Thank you so much for the support! I want to import data into KoboCollect that I’ve already collected using a different platform. I have the data in an excel file (GPS coordinates, etc.) and I want to view it on the map in Kobo. I will be collecting data using Kobo on an android moving forward.

Hi Alexis,
Which platform did you use? If you used an ODK platform like Formhub or Aggregate you’ll be able to export and import your data using ODK Briefcase. You could also upload XML files through a bulk submission feature, which would require the original form in XLSForm format, though.
Importing data from just an Excel file is not possible unfortunately.
Best,
Tino

Hi Alexis,
To my knowledge AkvoFlow is not an ODK-compatible tool, so you won’t be able to import the data that you collected with it into KoBo. Sorry.
Obviously you can re-create the form you used there to continue collecting more data on KoBo and then merge the two datasets in Excel later on…
Best,
Tino

Got it Tino, thank you so much!! I have one final question: If I’ve collected a bunch of data on water point functionality (functioning yes or no, if no, why broken, etc.) and then the status of that water point functionality changes (it wasn’t functioning and now it is), is there a way for me to update that information in Kobo without having to click on each water point and update it manually?

Hi Alexis,
The way you can edit data in KoBo projects is by clicking on ‘View data in table’ → Click on the edit button next to the row instance you would like to edit → Click on ‘edit’, then after making the requisite changes, click on Submit to save the changes. If you mean editing the way you would do it in a spreadsheet, that’s not (yet) possible.

Hi Alexis,
Can you clarify exactly what you’re trying to do? Did you already submit the data from your mobile device(s) to the server (kc.kobotoolbox.org or kc.humanitarianresponse.info)? Once the data has been received by the server, and assuming your form included a GPS question, you can visualize the points in a map or by downloading the KML file that can then be imported into Google Earth or other software.
