KoBoCollect on Kobo Glo (or other eInk device)

Hello,

Have anybody had any experience in running KoBoCollect on an e-Ink device (like a hacked KoBo Glo running android for instance?) - or what effort would be required to make this run on e.g. a Kindle PW, is it feasible?

I think the eInk screen type devices would be better suited to “in the field” use in many areas than regular tablets… Plus they seem to be more sturdy…

Best regards,

Emil

Dear Emil,
your request/ question is not clear.

Dear Akinyemi,

Sorry - let me try to clarify… I would like to use e-ink tablets (e.g. Kobo (the e-reader thing) or Kindle) together with ODK or KoBo Collect. However, these e-ink devices typically do not run Android OS, although the kobo glo has been hacked to run Android. So my question is: has anybody tried running the KoBo Collect app on an e-ink device, and what was their experiences with that?

Hi Emil,

We have had the same thought. The sunlight-viewable e-ink screens are well suited for field use. I haven't been able get my hands on an e-ink reader that runs android yet, however. I did pre-order the Earl (www.meetearl.com), which is precisely what I think we are both looking for. Sadly, there have been delays, and the Earl has yet to ship. It does natively run android, and has an e-ink screen, so I have high hopes for it, when it finally does ship. Sorry I couldn't be more help with practical experience, but I surely understand where you are coming from. Please post any testing results here if you try kobo on a hacked device.

Thanks,
Travis

A couple of years ago, Ben wolfe at OpenMRS at the time (not sure now) was running ODK on nook tablets. There was also this initiative: https://sites.google.com/a/epiconcept.fr/odk/afritablet though I don’t know if it is still live.

We would be keen to hear from your experience if you go ahead with this!

Hi Travis,

Thanks for pointing me in direction of the Earl. I hadn’t seen that before, and will definitely check it out!

It would be very nice to have a device that runs android out of the box

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for that… The Nook project also looks interesting.

I think I will wait for the Earl though, and try to get some experience with that, before I dive into forcing full android on the Nook…
