Media Attachments Splitting

Hi Kobo Team,

I am having an issue when downloading media attachments. By default, Kobo names each media attachment folder within the ZIP with the UUID, which is usually fine. However, perhaps due to file size reasons, sometimes media attachments from the same survey submission sometimes are split into two folders within the ZIP. This is an issue because the second folder is then named with a different random UUID to the first, with only the first being included in the corresponding XLS survey responses export. This means that there is no way of linking the second folder of media attachments to the original submission-- We have no way of knowing which submission each second folder has come from.

There are two ways I can see that this issue might be resolved:

  1. Kobo could prevent media attachments from splitting into two folders or create subfolders within the UUID folder if splitting is required.
  2. The second folder could by default be named similarly to the first folder, perhaps with the UUID in the same way as the first, but with _2, _3 etc. at the end for example.

Any assistance you can provide on this issue would be much appreciated.

Nat

Welcome to the community, @Nat1! Could you kindly share a screenshot of the split media attachment with us? That would help us understand your issue pictorially.

Hi Kal,

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately as a new user I can only include a single screenshot. I have prepared a longer response, which will explain the issue more fully, are you able to lift this restriction?

Essentially I have 180 responses in the XLS download (180 responses to my survey) but 193 folders of media attachments, which demonstrates the splitting.

Thanks,
N

Hi Kal,

I was just wondering if you or the wider Kobo team has any thoughts or suggestions on the above issue? If this could be resolved it would make data analysis much more streamlined for our teams.

Best,
Nat
