Hi! Recently when I edit a response to remove pictures uploaded by the surveyor and then submit the edited form, the previous questions which were previously filled, especially ’Select One’ questions responses get deleted along with it and thus it keeps going back to previous questions whenever I try to submit the edited form until I fill them. Can someone help with this issue?
Have you added, removed or changed any of the questions in your form definition since these previous submissions were sent up?
Editing a form (in Enketo web browser) will basically load the latest version of your form and populate it with whatever the old raw submission data has. So, for example, if you have introduced new required questions into your form in the interim, these will now have to be filled in before you can save the edit.
Similarly, if you have changed any of your select questions - for example changed the choice name value from ‘1’ to ‘y’ - this may also cause issues like you observe; eg the (old) data had ‘1’ as the response value, but ‘1’ is no longer a recognized choice response in the new form version because “Yes” now maps to ‘y’.
I hadn’t changed the question which is getting this error, and this was a select one type of question as well. I had added another question in the form which is coming blank from the beginning when I open the form to edit as well, but the other questions which have remained untouched are getting cleared when I try to submit the form after editing the submission (only removing the picture uploaded at the very end).
Are you able to share the new version of he form (and, preferably, the old one too for reference)? Without seeing the form logic it’s hard to tell what may be causing some of the question responses to be blanked upon edit and re-submission.

I looked at your form (it is rather long, at close to 1500 lines) but I dont see anything in and around your question A8.1 that obviously amiss. However, A8.1 is relevant on its enclosing group, and this group is relevant on another question - A1.1 - which in turn is relevant on another question - A1. So certainly the pieces are in place for dependent questions like A8.1 getting blanked out if you’ve done any edits in the past and inadvertently made any of these become non-relevant.
Can you confirm in the actual DATA table whether the response to A8.1 actually has a value before you attempt to edit that particular submission? If it is already blank, then is it possible that this submission has been previously edited.
Again, I dont see anything in your form that would suggest removing pictures would in of itself trigger any of these chained relevant dependencies. But there is the possibility that something else was changed in the form during this edit?
Note, if you just want to get rid of the images for a submission, eg to recover storage space in your account, then you can do directly without editing the submission itself:
Thank you so much for the response! I’ll have a look at the form once more and see if the responses were previously edited. I had checked before editing if the responses were blank from the beginning and that was not the case. The responses were there before I started editing the form. However, I can check for any previous edits which is causing this issue.
Thank you for showing me that I can delete the media files without editing the response. I will try the same. It is really helpful. I will update you if the issue is resolved from my side or if it keeps happening even if i try the methods mentioned by you. Your help is much appreciated!!
