Questions about tablet purchase

Dear All, I am part of a research team that will be purchasing a bunch of tablets for a quantitative survey in Brazilian cities, and we intend to use Kobotoolbox for data collection. We have about US$150 budgeted for each tablet. Any advice on the list about what is best to purchase in this price range these days? Anything to be avoided? Thanks very much! Sean

Hi Sean,

In terms of recommendations it really depends on what you’re planning to use it for, and what the importance of particular features is. Here is an article that explains this in a bit more detail. At the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative we mostly use Nexus 7 devices, which are inexpensive but very versatile for the field. If you were buying devices for very specific purposes, this may not be the ideal device, but for generic purposes and low budgets I would recommend this tablet. In many situations having a smaller phone is important, e.g. moving around a lot in an urban area. For some projects battery life is the most important consideration, though in the city in our case this may be less relevant.

Best,
Tino
