Somehow the date of birth can be written without the calendar?

But be aware that you would need then to implement all calendar consistency checks yourself.
Maybe the no-calendar appearance for date questions might be interesting. (For mobile devices only, used to suppress the calendar.)
And long press on year (and month on some devices) allows easy navigation in calendar widgets.
