Assistance Needed: Randomizing and Filtering Choices in Multiple-Choice Question

Dear KoBoToolbox Support Team,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am working on a form where a multiple-choice question is linked to the respondent’s village, and I have encountered a challenge that I need your assistance with. Here’s a detailed explanation of the issue:

  1. Conditional Display Based on Villages:

    • The choices for the question depend on the village the respondent belongs to. For example:
      • If the respondent is from Village A, the options displayed are: 1, 2, 3, 4.
      • If the respondent is from Village B, the options displayed are: 5, 6, 7, 8, and so on.
    • The choices represent households in each village.
  2. Randomizing and Limiting Choices:

    • Some villages contain more than 10 households (e.g., up to 500 households). I need to display only 10 households at random for each village.
    • I have tried using the “Randomize” feature available in the form builder under question options, but it randomizes the entire list rather than limiting the display to 10 households.
  3. Alternative Approaches:

    • Is there another way to filter the households based on the village using advanced filtering or any other feature?
    • Currently, I am managing data for approximately 50 villages with a total of 4,550 households.

Could you please guide me on:

  • How to randomize and limit the displayed options to 10 households?
  • Whether there is a more efficient method to filter households based on the village?

Thank you in advance for your support. I appreciate your guidance and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

@ifpriliwp2, this support article Adding Cascading Select Questions should help you solve your issue.

If we have 400 choice I only want to display 10 out of 400 how is that done

My feeling is your requirement is how to create a sample of a list of households. Probably, this is easier done in Excel, before using Kobo them for the selected (sampled) households. Esp. as you probably also need to make sure that a sampled housrhold is taken only once (in the total enumeration).
