We are currently facing an issue while submitting responses through our KoboToolbox form. When users click on “Submit”, the following error message appears:
“Failed to execute ‘transaction’ on ‘IDBDatabase’: The database connection is closing.”
We would highly appreciate your urgent support in resolving this issue as soon as possible, since we are currently conducting a large-scale survey and require a high number of responses. Unfortunately, if participants face submission errors, many of them may not attempt to fill the form again, which could significantly affect our data collection process.
Could you please help us identify the cause of this issue and advise on the appropriate solution?
Thank you in advance for your support.
Hi @Myriam, welcome to the community. Sorry to hear you’re running into issues during data collection — here are a few checks that usually help resolve this type of problem.
- Avoid clearing the browser cache. If the user has filled out the form but hasn’t been able to submit it, their responses are stored locally in the browser’s IndexedDB. Clearing the cache will permanently erase any unsubmitted data.
- Validate your XLSForm. Upload your form to the ODK XLSForm validator: https://getodk.org/xlsform/ Fix any errors or warnings that appear, as these often cause unexpected behavior during submission.
- Try submitting using an updated browser. Sometimes outdated browser versions or cached scripts can interfere with form submission.
Please let us know how it goes!!
A quick question to help narrow things down: Does your form include very large preloaded CSVs, heavy media files, or complex cascading selects? These can significantly increase the load on the browser and cause submission failures.
Hello,
Thank you for your support.
We validated the XLSForm successfully using the ODK validator, and no validation errors were detected. The issue is also occurring even when participants use updated browsers such as Chrome and Safari.
Our form does not include heavy media files or large preloaded CSV datasets. It is a large-scale multilingual household survey with several grouped sections and skip-logic conditions, which we believe falls within the expected use case of KoboToolbox for research data collection.
Since the form validates correctly, could you please investigate whether this issue may be related to the web submission process, IndexedDB handling, or browser-side storage during submission?
As we are currently conducting active large-scale data collection, resolving this issue is extremely important to avoid losing potential survey participants and responses.
We would highly appreciate any recommendations or platform-side solutions you may provide.
Thank you again for your assistance.
