I have looked at your responses and appreciate your feedback. I must admit as I am still lost. Do I write the expression in the xls instead of kobo? Additionally, I prefer to use automated numbering, that doesnt change when edits are made to saved incomplete forms or otherwise. Can you please guide my non technical self? How is the xls then uploaded into kobo?

can you take a look at this at tell me what is wrong as the unique serial is not appearing?

Also do you recommend that the question number just appear in the name column. If so, this change is to be made directly in xls?

Hi @scherrie,

You could also have a look at this workaround which uses date-time stamp to auto generate a unique id for your survey form.

In the survey tab of your xlsform:

In the setting tab of your xlsform: Please note that this is optional (if and in-case you wish to name your survey submissions based on the unique id).
