Extremely long list of choices

Hi all,

We might have a list of more than 80 000 choices, is that going to be a problem for Kobo? Will the app be able to handle it and not bug or be too long to load? Should we use Enketo or KoboCollect, or it doesn’t matter?

Hi @dianedetoeuf,

If you try uploading 80000 choices (in a survey form), you will surely have a very difficult time as your form will take a lot of time to load. Thus for this, please try using the select one/ multiple from file instead of select one. The steps for configuring a survey form with the same is as follows:

  • In the survey sheet, try using select_one_from_file (file name with a CSV extension) or select_multiple_from_file (file name with a CSV extension) instead of the select_one as shown in the figure below:

  • In the choices sheet of the XLSForm, simply type the name of the variable i.e. fruits under the list_name and leave the value name and value label as name and label as shown in the figure below:

  • Create a separate choice file with CSV as extension as follows:

  • Upload and deploy the XLSForm from the project form builder user interface.

  • Upload the choices option file that you had saved as CSV format in the same say you add a media file to the form (e.g. SETTINGS > Media > Form Settings : Press +Add Document > Choose Files >After selecting the file: Press Upload ). Then press SAVE CHANGES which is located under the SETTINGS .

  • You are now ready, click to FORM and press COPY or OPEN to enter the data through ENKETO. You (may sometimes) need to refresh the ENKETO Page (if and in case you do not see the choices) before starting the survey. Please note that the data collection for this is only supported in ENKETO and not in KoBoCollect.

Note: If you are not able to download the data in XLS version, please try downloading the same in XLS (legacy) version.

Many thanks for your answer! When you say ’ You (may sometimes) need to refresh the ENKETO Page (if and in case you do not see the choices) before starting the survey. ', does that mean that this form will only work with internet or will it just refresh the list even being offline?

Hi @dianedetoeuf,

It only works on ENKETO (both offline and online) and not in KoBoCollect. But to be cautious, you will first need to load the page properly.

Is a fix for this issue in any planned release?
